Charlie Girl was so named as a tribute to my wife's courage and strength in battling with a body built at 5.31pm on a Friday and that subjected her to an ever increasing barrage of disease and failure. Never did she allow that to interfere with her commitment to and enjoyment of life or her love, care and concern for other people.

Being fortunate enough to retire early in 2002, Charlie was persuaded to join me and in 2003 we decided to buy a new yacht and sail the Mediterranean. Early retirement was a particular blessing to Charlie as her health over the previous twenty years had seen her successfully battle, first with cervical cancer, then breast cancer as well as progressive arthritis that necessitated the replacement of both hips in her early forties to name but the main protagonists. Unfortunately, upon returning home after an eight month cruise in November 2007 it was not to be third time lucky but the reverse. A rare, virulent and incurable cancer was diagnosed; her third and unrelated cancer. Sadly, despite a spirited battle that saw her live twice as long as her consultant's best estimate and continue sailing until October 2010, life gently, peacefully and painlessly ebbed from her body on the 11th of May 2011. All the family whom she loved so dearly that could make it at short notice, being all five children, three of their respective spouses, four of the eleven grandchildren (most were too young), one of her sisters and myself were with her as she quietly slipped away. It was a moving, emotional and comforting moment we shall all remember with much warmth.

She had been my soul mate and inspiration for 37 of her 58 years

This site was originally set up to keep in touch with family and close friends whilst we cruised but since then has gained a disparate readership and life of its own. As a further tribute to Charlie and her expressed desire for me to carry on living my life to the full, I intend to keep it going for as long as I can still sail.

We hope you will continue to enjoy its content.

Richards "Art of footsteering"
The mastery of which is essential for relaxed cruising. The only things missing are the glass of wine and Kalamata olives!
Captain "Moppity Bucket"
otherwise known as Charlie, an RYA Day Skipper whose talents included smart ways of doing things such as using the morning dew to mop the decks, even when moored to a very rickety pontoon!
